What is Sparky

Learn electronics and programming by building things that really work

Sparky Lab

The coding lab: colourful blocks, a board simulator and a USB connection. In advanced mode you can see what the program does inside, one instruction at a time.

Kits

From the Alarm Kit to the Robotic Arm: the parts, a step-by-step assembly guide and the Lab ready for your kit.

Games

Challenges where your program controls what happens on screen. You press a real button, the program decides and Sparky jumps.

Community

A place to show what you have built, discover other makers' projects and try them in your own Lab.

How it works

From block to board, no hidden magic

The blocks are not a separate toy: they are the gateway to how a computer really runs programs.

  1. Build

Plug the components into ports A–H: no soldering, no loose wires.

  2. Code

Snap blocks together: "when the button is pressed", "turn on the light", "wait".

  3. Simulate

Try everything in the simulator, in your browser, before connecting the board.

  4. Bring it to life

Send it to the board: the light turns on, the servo turns, the alarm goes off. The same program.

The hardware

The Sparky Computer is the brain of every project

An ESP32 board with 8 ports labelled A to H. Sparky components (buttons, lights, light sensors, potentiometers, servos and a buzzer) simply plug in, with no soldering or loose wires.

Connect it to your computer with a USB cable, or play with it from your phone over Bluetooth.

Frequently asked questions

While you wait

Have another question? Write to us at equipa@sparky.pt.

When can I start using Sparky?
We are putting on the finishing touches. Leave your email and we will let you know as soon as the Sparky Lab and the kits are available. In the meantime, you can already try Sparky Explore.
Will I need a board to get started?
No. The Sparky Lab has a simulator in the browser. The board and kits are for when you want to take your program into the real world.
How old do I need to be?
Sparky is designed for ages 8 and up, with blocks and a guided tutorial. Older kids (and adults) have the advanced mode and the more complex kits, such as the Robotic Arm.
Will I need to install anything?
No. Everything works in the browser. To connect the board over USB, all you need is Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on your computer.
